Most people know that gutter cleaning is an important part of home maintenance, but few have the time or motivation to clean their gutters as thoroughly and as often as they should. If you live in an area where persistent rain and other weather conditions result in a great deal of fallen debris, gutter cleaning is even more important to maintaining the integrity of your home.

Why clean your gutters?

The purpose of rain gutters is to divert water from the roof and away from the house. When gutters become full of debris or downspouts become clogged, the gutters can no longer function properly and all types of property damage can occur, including:

• Rotted fascia boards
• Water damage to the siding and edges of the roof
• Concrete damage
• Basement flooding
• Foundation damage

In addition, decomposing organic material builds up in unclean rain gutters over time, creating prime growing space for bacteria and other unwanted organisms. Gutters occasionally become so full of debris that ferns and even small trees begin to take root inside the gutter muck!  

Depending on the weather conditions and the number of trees near your home, thorough gutter cleaning is recommended once or twice a year to maintain proper function. The best times to clean your gutters are once in the late fall (when most leaves are down) and once more in the late spring/early summer, just after pollen and seedlings drop from the trees. However, you should have your gutters cleaned promptly as soon as you begin to notice issues (such as water flowing out from the sides) as this preventive action can save you a lot of time, money, and headaches in water damage to your home in the long run.
